Finding a short stay apartment to rent for a few days or a week or two in Europe is easy. There are hundreds of sites out there offering holiday accommodation all over the continent. Equally, finding furnished apartments to rent for a year is simple too. But what about those in-between stays overseas that are longer than just a week or two but less than a short-term tenancy?
You can get some absolutely fantastic deals on furnished apartments in Europe, but you MUST check that they offer monthly rates or flexible month-to-month payments. If they do then the amount you’re likely to pay will be far less than the equivalent charge for a month’s stay on daily or weekly rates. This type of deal is most likely to be available outside of peak holiday times when the rentals are not at maximum occupancy.
Even if a monthly rate is not advertised for a furnished apartment, it may well be worth contacting the owner to see if they’d be open to a longer deal. Many are likely to be tempted by the ‘bird in the hand’ option rather than having a property sit empty.
If you’re going to be staying in furnished apartments for a matter of weeks rather than days, you’re going to need a full range of amenities including things like a washing machine and dryer, coffee machine, television and perhaps even a dishwasher. A quick and reliable Wi-Fi connection is also a must, particularly if you’re going to be working from the apartment.
When searching for monthly rentals, you should pay more attention to the square footage of the apartment. While something compact might be perfect for a city break, it’s likely to be too small to live in comfortably over the longer term.
The location of temporary living apartments is also something to consider carefully. On a holiday, you’ll probably want to be within a stone’s throw of the main tourist attractions, but for a longer stay, somewhere safe and quiet with excellent transport links might be a better fit for your needs.
If you’re looking for monthly rentals for an extended work trip, then making sure the apartment is in a convenient location and a commutable distance to your workplace is essential. In recent years, there has been a rise in the number of so-called ‘digital nomads’ – freelancers who can work from anywhere with an internet connection. If you’re lucky enough to be in that position then checking the distance to shared workspaces may also be a consideration.
Monthly rentals are somewhere to live rather than just a base to explore, so you need to consider the type of life you want to lead. If you’re relocating with your family then residential areas with good schools, parks, shops and another amenities will be popular. If you’re a digital nomad then perhaps you want to stay in a lively or bohemian area, where there’s plenty to see and do after a day of work. If fitness is important to you then a nearby gym or a pleasant outdoor space to run or cycle should feature high on your list.
